Waiting by Ha Jin

Mabel Looney wrote to us to recommend Waiting by Ha Jin.  She says:
A beautiful book set in China during Mao's Cultural Revolution. Won a Pulitzer Prize. This sparely written story of an Army surgeon torn between family and mistress will capture your attention and surprise you.

Read a good book lately?

Some books really put us into the writer’s world -- when we put them down we have a different perspective than when we started. Sometimes we find our own world captured in the pages. Have you ever thought, “This describes my family!” or “Those could be my friends!” We want to highlight books that like that in the City College library collections and get more of them. Please tell us about books that open up our cultural experiences on any subject, including memoirs and fiction. Contact Karen Saginor ksaginor@ccsf.edu 415-452-5522

The Iceburg Model of Culture

What do we mean when we talk about culture? Of course there's music and food, but aspects of culture go much deeper than that. There's how we do things, what we expect of others, and many other assumptions and concepts that lie beneath the surface of what we talk about. Some cultural aspects are so deep that they are below our consciousness. In this way culuture is like an iceberg, there's more below the surface than is visible above. You can find a great diagram of the iceburg model at: http://www.doe.in.gov/lmmp/pdf/iceburgofculture.pdf

Welcome!

Share books, share the wealth of our cultures! This blog is an experiment towards promoting books (and other sources) that help connect all of us to our own cultures or help us learn about other cultures. If you are a member of the City College community and have a book you want to share, contact librarian Karen Saginor ksaginor@ccsf.edu 415-452-5522
