The Iceburg Model of Culture

What do we mean when we talk about culture? Of course there's music and food, but aspects of culture go much deeper than that. There's how we do things, what we expect of others, and many other assumptions and concepts that lie beneath the surface of what we talk about. Some cultural aspects are so deep that they are below our consciousness. In this way culuture is like an iceberg, there's more below the surface than is visible above. You can find a great diagram of the iceburg model at: http://www.doe.in.gov/lmmp/pdf/iceburgofculture.pdf

Welcome!

Share books, share the wealth of our cultures! This blog is an experiment towards promoting books (and other sources) that help connect all of us to our own cultures or help us learn about other cultures.
